Walking the GR10
Across the Pyrenees in 40 days

The GR (Grande Randonnée) 10 is a long distance footpath which traverses the French Pyrenees from west to east, covering a total distance of about 800km. During the summer of 2002 I completed the walk in eight stages (étapes) of three to six days with exercusions off onto the more challenging Haute Route Pyrenées (HRP) when possible. I walked about half the stages alone and the rest with various friends and relations staying at either mountain refuges, gite d'étapes or, occasionally, hotels. I started under blue skies on the Atlantic coast at Hendaye Plage and finished in autumn sunshine at Banyuls sur Mer, on the Mediterranean five and a half months later.

This site describes the walk in pictures and words to give a glimpse of the grandeur and immense variation of these mountains, from pretty Basque villages, the snow covered peaks of the Hautes Pyreness, the deep, verdent valleys of the Ariege through to the barren, rocky expanses of the Cerdagne. Whilst more a memoir than a guide I have included a small reference section covering the statistics of the walk, the places I stayed, the food I ate and the gear I carried which may be of use to future walkers. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like any more information.
