otago siberia experience
Most of the magnificent wilderness of Mt Aspiring National Park is only available to overnight hikers, but the Siberia Experience offers access to those with a sense of adventure and a good level of fitness. The trip begins with a 20 minute scenic flight into the Alps, often taking in a view of Mt Aspiring. After landing in the remote Siberia Valley, cross the Siberia stream and commence your hike. The route is along meadow flats beside a stream then climbs more steeply through beech forest and over a rocky saddle. Descend into the Wilkin River valley to the riverside track where a jet boat meets you for an exhilarating ride out along this wide braided river. The hike takes 2-3 hours and is unguided but the trail is very well defined.

Park at Raspberry Creek, the entrance to Mt Aspiring National Park and cross a swing bridge some 20 mins into the hike. The route takes 3-4 hours return of fairly steep hiking. Towards the end you reach a mountain cirque with spectacular views of hanging glaciers. There are some magnificent waterfalls and New Zealand's native alpine parrot, the kea, will entertain you over lunch. Including the drive this is a 6 hour excursion. Usually freedom walked, it can be guided.
